Mount Steward was the venue for the first part (static scale competition) of the new NIAA scale championships. The area provided by the National Trust for the static display of the models, was set in the beautiful gardens at the rear of Mount Steward house with the added bonus of an adjoining large grassed area where the flying display of small radio and control line models took place.
The static completion attracted over 21 entrants with nearly 40 models on show within the various categories of Jet, WW1, WW2, Civilian, Helicopter and Junior. The standard of models this year was once again of a very high standard, with many new fine examples on show. Particular models of note included, Robert Graham new 1/3 scale Stearman with its six cylinder radial engine, Ray Jenning's fine example of the Comet, Steven Brown's Large Piper Cub, Peter Carson's f18 turbine jet, David Ardis, with his beautiful Bell 222 and Harry Reid's fantastic Agusta Air Ambulance Helicopter.
The panel of three judges comprising of Dennis McNeill, Joe McColum and Richard Boyd, had the time consuming and difficult task of inspecting each model in detail and awarding points for accuracy and outline etc, of the model to the full size counterpart presented in the documentation accompanying the model.
The flying display, which was not officially part of the scale competition but an added attraction for the hundreds of spectators in attendance, started around 1.00pm and on the hour until 4.00pm. Maurice and the Belfast boys started the show with an exciting display of control line flying, comprising of scale, aerobatic and fast combat models. Harry and Robert were next to fly with their fantastic synchronized helicopter display routine, with two Hughs 500 electric helicopters flying close together and performing opposition manoeuvres, it looked great and the crowd loved it.
Matthew was next on the flight line with a precision aerobatic routine with a small electric model performing rolls and loops to his usual incredible standard and unique style of flying.
The jet boys finished off the display with the running up of the turbine engine from one of the jet models on display, a noisy and very smoky affair, but once again the crowd loved it.
The event ended around 4.30pm, after the presentation for the prize winners and quick clean up of the display area. Overall the competition went very well apart from a small mistake made in the final scoring, however this did not take away from a great venue and a fun day out for all those taking part.
